DAILY RETAIL PRICE SITUATION OF ESSENTIAL COMMODITIES IN PUNJAB

 

INTRODUCTION:

Bureau of Statistics (BoS), Punjab is an attached department of the Planning and Development Board, and its mandate to collect, compile, analyze and disseminate of statistical data activity through periodic publications and electronic media in the province.

Bureau of Statistics, Punjab is responsible for the collection, compilation and dissemination of the current statistics in the Province.

SURVEY OF DAILY RETAIL PRICES:

Price fluctuation in different commodities has become tremendous challenges and provide data opportunities to economists and policymakers. It helps to identify the trends and behavior of the commodities to sort out the solutions to sustain the prices because commodity price are believed to be a leading indicator of inflation. It provides a solid direction for the economists and policymakers to analyze the purchasing power of a common man in the society.

COVERAGE:

Bureau of Statistics, Punjab covers 9 divisional headquarter cities to collect retail prices of 70 essential commodities which includes grocery items, seasonal vegetables and fruits etc. The current list cities and number of markets in each city are given below:

Incharge Officers in every Regional/Field offices are responsible for the technical supervision of work done by the price collectors. After the collection of Daily Prices from all the stations, a comprehensive report is being published with the mutual help of Data Processing Division of BoS regularly. In this regard, a price index is evaluated for each commodity which indicates the percentage change of a particular commodities.

QUALITY ASSURANCE:

During the data collection, all the principals set for the official statistics have been deployed to ensure the quality of the data.

OUTPUT:

Daily, Weekly, Fortnightly, Monthly & Yearly price reports have been developed along with one pager template analysis of essential commodities.
